Commercial vehicle manufacturer Ashok Leyland has begun construction of a battery pack manufacturing facility near Chennai in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The project involves an investment of around ₹500 crore and will be located at Pillaipakkam, an industrial area on the outskirts of the city.
The upcoming facility is intended to produce battery packs for electric commercial vehicles, including electric buses and trucks. The plant is expected to support the company’s electric mobility operations by enabling local assembly of battery systems used in its EV lineup.
The development is part of broader industrial investments linked to agreements between the company’s parent group and the state government to expand manufacturing activity in Tamil Nadu. The state has been promoting electric vehicle production and related supply-chain manufacturing through policy incentives and infrastructure support.
Once operational, the battery pack plant is expected to contribute to the regional EV manufacturing ecosystem by supporting component localisation and creating employment opportunities in the area.
