Ashok Leyland, the Hinduja Group-owned commercial vehicle maker, has begun constructing a greenfield electric vehicle (EV) battery pack manufacturing facility at Pillaipakkam near Chennai. The project, with an estimated investment of ₹400–500 crore, forms part of the Hinduja Group’s earlier commitments under a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed in September 2025.
The new facility aligns with Tamil Nadu’s Electric Vehicle Policy 2023, the National Mission on Transformative Mobility and Battery Storage, and India’s goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2070. It is expected to strengthen domestic EV battery production, support supply chain localization, and create employment and skill development opportunities in the state.
Dheeraj Hinduja, Executive Chairman of Ashok Leyland, said, “Along with our subsidiary Switch Mobility, we have developed a wide range of electric commercial vehicles and lead in the EV market. This new battery pack facility marks a key milestone in our electric mobility journey and demonstrates our commitment to a strong domestic EV ecosystem.”
Shenu Agarwal, MD & CEO of Ashok Leyland, added, “Battery pack technology is central to the future of electric mobility. This facility will enable us to manufacture advanced battery solutions with improved efficiency, safety, and reliability, while supporting local supply chain development and creating high-tech job opportunities in Tamil Nadu.”
