In a major push toward sustainable urban transport, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has approved the procurement of 1,000 electric buses and the installation of 5,000 EV charging stations across the state. The initiative aims to accelerate the transition to clean energy and modernize public transportation under the state’s long-term e-mobility strategy.
1,000 Electric Buses to Modernise APSRTC Fleet
The Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) will induct 1,000 new electric buses as part of its effort to shift entirely to electric mobility over the next five years.
The new fleet is expected to:
-
Reduce fuel dependency
-
Lower operational costs
-
Improve air quality in major cities
-
Enhance comfort and accessibility for commuters
The e-buses will be deployed in key urban and intercity routes, supporting both daily commuters and long-distance travelers.
5,000 EV Charging Stations Planned Across the State
The Chief Minister has also cleared the proposal to set up 5,000 charging stations at strategic locations, including:
-
High-traffic urban corridors
-
Bus depots and terminals
-
National and state highways
-
Tourist routes
-
Rural connectivity zones
This rollout will support not only public buses but also private EV users, thereby expanding the overall charging infrastructure and accelerating EV adoption in Andhra Pradesh.
Part of a Wider Clean-Energy and Mobility Strategy
The approvals were issued during a high-level review meeting on the state’s energy, transport, and environment sectors.
The broader clean-energy roadmap includes:
-
Accelerating solar and renewable energy projects
-
Studying pumped-storage solutions
-
Implementing pollution-control measures
-
Expanding rooftop solar installations in government and welfare buildings
-
Strengthening the EV policy for public and private transport
The government aims to position AP as a “clean-energy leader” with large-scale electrification across multiple sectors.
Support for Women’s Free Bus Travel Scheme
The incoming electric buses are also expected to enhance the Stree Shakti free bus travel scheme, offering safer and cleaner mobility for women across urban and rural routes.
Local reports indicate that the addition of electric buses will improve service frequency and reduce overcrowding during peak hours.
AP Targets Full Transport Electrification
With this move, Andhra Pradesh strengthens its commitment to electrifying the entire RTC fleet and creating a robust EV ecosystem.
Officials state that achieving this goal will require:
-
Continuous fleet expansion
-
Investment in charging infrastructure
-
Strong partnerships with EV manufacturers
-
Integration of renewable energy sources for charging
