Ahmedabad is set to significantly expand its green public transport network, as the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) plans to introduce 1,960 new air-conditioned electric buses by 2027.
The initiative aims to promote environmentally sustainable mobility, reduce fuel consumption, and offer more comfortable commuting options to residents. Over the past year, AMC has already placed orders for 561 electric buses, including 311 for the Ahmedabad Municipal Transport Service (AMTS) and 250 for the Bus Rapid Transit System Ahmedabad (BRTS). Delivery and phased operations of these buses are expected to begin in 2026.
Additionally, an order for 1,000 electric buses has been placed under the PM E-DRIVE programme. The tendering process for another 660 buses is currently underway, while plans are being finalized to invite bids for an additional 300 buses. Together, these efforts will bring the total number of new electric buses to 1,960 by 2027. AMC has also set a broader target of deploying 2,700 electric buses over the next five years.
At present, Ahmedabad operates around 400 CNG-powered AC buses alongside 204 electric buses. With the planned expansion, the city’s green mobility fleet is expected to reach approximately 3,100 buses, strengthening its position as a leader in sustainable urban transport.
The environmental benefits are expected to be substantial. By 2030, when nearly 3,000 electric buses are projected to be operational, greenhouse gas emissions could decrease by about 300 tonnes per day, or nearly 1.1 lakh tonnes annually. Diesel consumption is also expected to decline significantly, contributing to a reduced carbon footprint.
Officials highlight that electric buses offer economic advantages as well, due to fewer mechanical components, lower maintenance requirements, and reduced downtime. For commuters, the shift promises cleaner, quieter, and more comfortable travel, which may encourage greater use of public transport and help ease traffic congestion.
The move is also aligned with the city’s long-term vision, especially in view of potential international events such as the proposed Commonwealth Games 2030. Authorities estimate that an additional 800 to 1,000 buses may be required during such occasions.
Electric bus services in Ahmedabad began in 2019 under the BRTS with an initial fleet of 50 buses, followed by 150 more in 2021. The continued expansion reflects AMC’s commitment to transforming Ahmedabad into a model city for green mobility.
