Ahmedabad is accelerating efforts to strengthen its electric vehicle (EV) charging network as it prepares to host the Commonwealth Games. With four years remaining before the international sporting event, civic authorities are working to expand charging infrastructure across key locations in the city.
The Ahmedabad Municipal corporation (AMC) had identified 81 sites for public EV charging stations. So far, approvals have been granted for 31 locations, while 21 stations are operational and a handful are under development. However, more than half of the proposed sites are yet to attract private bidders, slowing the rollout process.
Despite state incentives and policy support aimed at boosting EV infrastructure, private sector participation has remained limited. Officials say efforts are ongoing to encourage investment through public-private partnerships and to ensure the city’s transport ecosystem aligns with sustainability goals ahead of the Games.
Authorities view the expansion of EV charging facilities as a key step toward reducing emissions and promoting cleaner mobility in the run-up to 2030.
