60% rise in EV-first researchers, 242% spike in mileage searches: CarDekho data signals changing consumer behaviour

As India’s electric vehicle market continues to evolve, CarDekho Group’s Auto Classified platform has released new insights highlighting how consumer preferences and EV demand have shifted over the past year. Based on industry data and proprietary platform insights between May 2025 and May 2026, the findings indicate that EV consideration is expanding beyond metro cities, with buyer preferences becoming increasingly value- and aspiration-driven.

The number of users researching only electric vehicles on the platform grew by 60% over the past year, reflecting a rising EV-first mindset among Indian car buyers. During the same period, users researching only internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles declined by 14%, pointing to a gradual shift in consumer consideration.

      Key Highlights

      • Bharat is driving India’s EV growth, with Bhubaneswar recording the highest year-on-year increase in EV research activity at 84%
      • SUVs account for 82.5% of EV consideration on the platform
      • EV mileage calculation searches surged 242% in May 2026, reflecting growing consumer focus on running costs

The strongest momentum is emerging from Tier 2 and smaller cities, where EV search interest is growing nearly three times faster than in Tier 1 markets. Bhubaneswar recorded the highest growth in EV research activity at 84%, followed by Gurugram (75%) and Jaipur (72%). Agra, Patna and Ludhiana also ranked among the fastest-growing EV research markets, each registering over 50% year-on-year growth. The trend is particularly noteworthy as several of these markets are still in the early stages of developing EV charging infrastructure.

The data also highlights a shift in the type of vehicles consumers are considering. SUVs now account for 82.5% of total EV consideration on the platform, registering 30.8% year-on-year growth, while hatchbacks contribute approximately 11%. The findings suggest that consumers are increasingly seeking electric vehicles that combine performance, space and premium features, rather than viewing EVs solely as an economical mobility option.

Rising fuel prices have further strengthened EV consideration. During the period of heightened fuel-price concerns, EV purchase-intent enquiries increased by 51% and remained 38% higher even after fuel prices stabilised, indicating sustained consumer interest beyond short-term market fluctuations.

Consumer research is also becoming more practical and ownership-focused. Searches for EV mileage calculations increased by 242% in May 2026, suggesting that buyers are placing greater emphasis on understanding real-world running costs and driving range before making a purchase decision.

The findings indicate that India’s EV market is entering its next phase of growth, with demand becoming broader, more geographically diverse and increasingly driven by informed consumer choice.
